We take note of the reaction from « Rassemblement pour le Planet », Sea Shepherds and different questions which have been sent to us: if we can understand these reactions, we cannot however accept Surfriders reconsideration of nomination within the CNTE. In addition, we wish to reiterate that we aren’t the only organisation present at the conference. If each association defends its own cause, we all have a common objective and we regret these attacks which obscure the real problems which should unite us.
Surfrider would first like to remind you of its wish to be able to actively collaborate with all stakeholders acting to preserve the planets natural resources, the complementary expertise, actions and networks being a force! It is why at the end of the first Environmental Conference, when the number of NGO’s entitled to sit at the CNTE were set to increase, Surfrider Foundation Europe expressed its wish to actively participate in debates, relying on its recognised expertise in the protection and education of the environment for over 20 years. Objective: to represent the voice of nearly 100,000 supporters who identify with its values and are committed throughout Europe. Fulfilling the objectives criteria of representivity and expertise required, the association was officially authorised at the start of September.
Surfrider Foundation is an international network and for almost 30 years has been working to protect oceans, seas, coasts, and the people who enjoy them. In Europe Surfrider is one of the only NGO’s to specifically address issues relating to the preservation of oceans and coastal management. Uniting over 10,00 members, 100,000 supporters, around 30 local chapters in Europe and overseas, as well as local associations. Surfrider carries claims directly from national and european institutions, with hearings particularly on the Framework Strategy Directive for the marine environment, the Erika III package, maritime transport security, oil rigs or legislations on waste.
The association is historically an active counterforce as demonstrated by its programs » Black Flags » or « Keepers of the Coast », as well as its many disputes against sea polluters. For many years Surfriders also been a major player in environmental consultation. Since 2012, its been one of the NGO’s authorised by the state to participate primarily in environmental public debates at a national level. They have already been one of the principal NGO contributors to Grenelle of the sea in 2009, and is also a member of the Economic, Social and Environmental Council (CESE), a member of the National Sea and Coast Council (CNMC) and of 3 marine facade committees. Its aim: make them hear the necessary considerations of an ecosystem approach to marine issues.
Authorised for public education since 2006, Surfrider is also developing an ambitious training and awareness programs for young audiences with environmental interests, especially during events and water activities.
An independent NGO and authorised by the State, renowned actor in public education and active counterforce: all assets which legitimize the indisputable presence of Surfrider at the Environmental Conference. The association will support 26 proposals already made public.
